Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 617 revolver is chambered in .22 LR caliber and is an improved version of the previous model 17. It features stainless steel construction as opposed to the standard blued carbon steel. The revolver is built on a K (medium frame) with a square butt, which was first introduced in 1899 with the .38 Military & Police revolver. The Smith & Wesson 617 revolver comes with either a 4-inch or 6-inch barrel; the 8 3/8 inch version is no longer available. This model, chambered in .22 LR caliber, is built on a stainless steel K frame and features an external hammer. The side plate is secured with three screws. The revolver has both single and double-action triggers. The full barrel lug gives the gun a solid appearance. The satin finish on the steel ensures durability even with rough handling. Similar to other recent Smith & Wesson revolvers, the firing pin is housed in the frame. The hammer is checkered, providing a secure grip.
The latest generation of cylinder release control, introduced in 1996 on these revolvers, has a more ergonomic shape than previous designs. The 617, like all other models produced by this historic American brand, features an automatic safety called Hammer Block. This safety prevents contact between the hammer and the firing pin until the trigger is fully pulled.
