Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 625 is a double-action revolver chambered in either .45 ACP or .45 Colt (note: these calibers are not interchangeable). Built on the round-butt N-Target frame with a three-screw configuration, the Model 625 features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.55 inches. It debuted with a 5-inch full-lug barrel, though later variants introduced 3-inch and 4-inch options to suit a wider range of preferences. Early production models came equipped with Pachmayr SN/GR grips, which were eventually replaced by the more ergonomic Hogue Monogrip. For improved control and handling, the revolver’s frame includes a 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap. The sighting system consists of a pinned, serrated black ramp front sight mounted on a ramp base, paired with a fully adjustable micrometer-click rear sight. Additional features include a .400-inch semi-target hammer and a .312-inch smooth combat trigger. The Model 625 is designed for use with half-moon clips and sports a non-glare, glass-beaded matte finish to minimize reflections and reduce visual signature. The model’s introduction and designation have caused some confusion. Interestingly, the first version released carries a dash-two (-2) designation.

Early variations are found marked both “Model of 1988” and “Model of 1989.” A side-by-side comparison reveals that the “Model of 1988” has roll-stamped barrel markings and a ramp front sight, while the “Model of 1989” features laser-etched markings and a patridge front sight. Apart from these details and the markings themselves, both variants are nearly identical in construction and appearance. Remaining in production since 1989, the Model 625 has earned a strong following among revolver enthusiasts for its robust build, smooth operation, and ability to reliably chamber .45 ACP with the use of moon clips.
