Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Red Label was an over-and-under shotgun produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. under the leadership of William B. Ruger. The concept for the Red Label was inspired by the success of European-made over-and-under shotguns, particularly the Browning Superposed, which was introduced in 1931. American hunters and sportsmen quickly embraced the over-and-under design, which offered advantages over the traditional side-by-side shotguns, such as a more streamlined sighting plane and reduced recoil due to the stacked barrels. The Ruger Red Label was officially introduced in 1977, initially in 20 gauge with a 26" barrel, priced at $480—equivalent to around $2,074 in 2018 adjusted for inflation.

The development of the Red Label came at a time when most American-made shotguns of the over-and-under variety were either imported or prohibitively expensive. Ruger’s goal was to create a competitively priced, high-quality, American-made over-and-under shotgun that could rival the craftsmanship of the best European shotguns. To achieve this, Ruger made a significant investment in advanced manufacturing technologies and precision machinery, allowing them to produce a reliable, well-built shotgun at a lower cost than hand-made European alternatives. At the time of its release, the only other notable American-made over-and-under was the Remington Model 3200, which was priced nearly twice as high as the Red Label.

The Red Label quickly gained popularity for its affordability, reliability, and handling, becoming a favorite among American shooters. It remained in production for over three decades, with Ruger expanding the line in 1979 to include a 12 gauge version. In 1994, a 28 gauge variant was introduced, catering to enthusiasts of smaller gauge shotguns. The Red Label was available with either an English straight stock or a pistol grip stock, giving shooters the option to personalize their firearm to suit their preferences.
