Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The SIG P225 is a smaller version of the SIG P220. In the mid-1970s, a new German police standard was issued, which led to the development of new pistols by Walther, SIG-Sauer, and Heckler & Koch to meet the requirements. These included the Walther P5, the SIG-Sauer P225 (known as the P6), and the Heckler & Koch P7. Additionally, Mauser had a design called the HsP, but it never went into full production. Walter Ludwig was involved in the design of the Walther, SIG-Sauer, and Mauser pistols for the German Police selection. Each German state had the freedom to purchase the pistol of their choice.
Initially, the P220 was submitted, and the P225/P6 was later developed to meet the mid-1970s West German police requirements for its standard service pistol. The SIG-Sauer P225 was the least expensive due to its innovative design and consequently received the majority of the orders. In order to meet the demand, SIG acquired a controlling interest in J.P. Sauer & Sohn in Eckernförde, Germany to manufacture parts for the P220. This is also where all P225s were manufactured. The main difference between the P6 and P225 (which was adopted by US civilian law enforcement) is the lighter trigger pull of the P225, whereas the P6 has a heavier trigger pull. The P225 also has tritium fixed sights, while the P6 has fixed sights only. Genuine P225s manufactured for the West German Police will have a "P6" stamp on the right side of the slide.
