Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger P series is a line of centerfire semi-automatic pistols produced by Sturm, Ruger & Company from 1985 to 2013, designed for military, police, civilian, and recreational use. The P series pistols are based on the Browning action found in the M1911, with some variations in the safety mechanism and barrel-camblock interface. Known for their ruggedness, reliability, and strength, these pistols were often considered bulkier and more blocky in appearance. The P85, introduced in 1987, was the first model in the P series. It was a full-sized, DA/SA, alloy-framed service pistol designed to compete in the 1984 U.S. military pistol trials, though it missed the deadline. The P85 was affordable, less than competitors. However, it faced a recall after a firing pin issue led to accidental discharges. If the firing pin broke and was positioned in front of the firing pin block, applying the safety could transfer energy to the broken pin, causing a discharge. Ruger fixed this by installing a new safety mechanism that prevented contact between the firing pin and hammer during decocking, and this update was offered free of charge. This modified version became the P85 MK II in 1989, featuring larger safety levers and improved accuracy. The P85 MK II remained in production until 1992, when it was replaced by the P89, which was essentially a rebranded P85 MK II. After the introduction of the P89, the P85 was discontinued. Both the P85 and P85 MK II were chambered in 9mm, with a 15+1 round capacity.
