Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 64-4 NY-1 is a notable revolver in the history of law enforcement firearms, specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of the New York City Police Department (NYCPD). Introduced in 1987, this .38 S&W Special revolver is part of a specific run tailored for NYPD officers, reflecting the department's transition to stainless steel firearms and double-action-only (DAO) operation for enhanced reliability and ease of use under stress. The Model 64-4 NY-1 features a 2-inch frosted stainless steel barrel, providing a balance between concealability and effective range. The frosted finish not only enhances durability but also reduces glare, which was a practical improvement over earlier brushed stainless finishes that tended to become shiny with use. The revolver is equipped with a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front sight and a square notch rear sight, designed for quick target acquisition and accuracy. Its checkered walnut service grips, combined with a Tyler T Grip adapter, offer a secure and comfortable hold, essential for both daily carry and quick draw scenarios.
This model adheres to the NYPD's specifications, including the placement of the serial number on the frame below the cylinder window for easier verification. Initially, early production models had the serial number stamped traditionally, but later ones used a decal or acid-etching method for the third location of the serial number. The Model 64-4 NY-1 was produced in several variations, with the 2-inch barrel variant being one of the more common configurations, alongside other barrel lengths and butt shapes. However, production was relatively limited, with a total estimated at 5,504 units across all configurations. The Model 64-4 NY-1 was utilized by the NYPD from its introduction until 1993, when it was phased out in favor of 9mm pistols. After this period, many of these revolvers were returned to Smith & Wesson and subsequently resold, sometimes with modifications back to standard double-action/single-action configurations. This model holds historical significance as both the last revolver authorized for on-duty use by the NYPD and the first stainless steel revolver adopted by the department. Its legacy remains a testament to the NYPD's influence on firearm design and its ongoing collaboration with Smith & Wesson.
