Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Double Eagle was a semi-automatic pistol produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1989 to 1997. It was manufactured in both standard full-size and compact versions, and it was chambered for various calibers. The Double Eagle was based on the Colt M1911 pistol, and it included a decocking lever. Its family of models was referred to as the Series 90. The magazines were single-stack and were identical to the ones shipped with the M1911. Most Double Eagle models were available in stainless steel only, but the "Lightweight" Officer had an alloy frame and blued slide. The double action mechanism was designed primarily by Ron Smith of Smith Enterprise, Inc. The slide used a variation of Colt's series 80 locking firing pin safety. However, unlike Colt's series 80 pistols, the Double Eagle Officer's model in .45 ACP had an 8-round magazine.
The Double Eagle is a type of firearm that comes in several calibers. The more common calibers are .45 ACP and 10mm Auto, but sometimes you might find one in .40 S&W, 9×19mm Parabellum, and .38 Super. Like the M1911, Colt also offers compact versions of the gun called Commander and Officer. The full-sized version is available in .45 ACP and 10mm Auto and was also made in 9mm and .38 Super for a brief period in 1992. The Commander is chambered for .45 ACP, and there's a rare .40 S&W version that was produced in 1992. The Officer's model is available in .45 ACP and rarely in .40 S&W, again only in 1992. Colt had to redesign the trigger mechanism and add a retaining plate to address some issues that some shooters had experienced with the skin being pinched by the top part of the trigger, as well as some springs only being retained by the grip panel. The result of the redesign was the Double Eagle Mark II.
