Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this limited edition semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Double Eagle MKII Series 90!

The Double Eagle is the sister model variant to such classics as the Gold Cup National Match, Government, Combat Commander, and Delta Elite Models.

The Colt Double Eagle MKII Series 90 was manufactured from 1990 to 1996 as Colt’s innovative attempt to modernize the classic 1911 with a double-action/single-action trigger system and added safety features. Designed for both law enforcement and civilian use, it offered the familiar ergonomics of the 1911 with the added convenience of a DA/SA trigger and decocking lever. Among its various chamberings was the powerful 10mm Auto, which was offered for a limited time before being discontinued in 1993, making this example particularly rare and desirable among collectors today!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Double Eagle MKII Series 90 is an intriguing and often underappreciated chapter in Colt’s storied history with the 1911 platform. Introduced in the early 1990s, the Double Eagle was Colt’s answer to the growing popularity of double-action/single-action (DA/SA) semi-automatic pistols, particularly among law enforcement and military markets seeking a more modern approach to safety and handling. While it retained many of the visual and functional elements of the classic 1911—such as its slide profile, grip angle, and single-stack magazine—the Double Eagle featured a completely redesigned frame and trigger mechanism. The key difference lies in the DA/SA operation: the first shot can be fired in double-action with a longer, heavier trigger pull, followed by lighter single-action pulls on subsequent shots. This system was paired with a decocking lever located on the left side of the frame, allowing the user to safely lower the hammer without discharging the firearm. The Series 90 also featured ambidextrous controls and a modified grip profile, making it somewhat more ergonomic for a broader range of shooters.

The MKII version of the Double Eagle, introduced after initial production runs revealed some reliability and durability concerns, addressed many of those early issues. The trigger mechanism was re-engineered with fewer moving parts and improved internal geometry to provide smoother operation and better long-term reliability. Available in several chamberings—including .45 ACP, 10mm Auto, 9mm, and .40 S&W—the Double Eagle MKII was offered in both full-size Government and more compact Commander-length variants. The frame was available in stainless steel or blued steel, depending on model and production year. While the Double Eagle never achieved the widespread success Colt had hoped for and was discontinued by the mid-1990s, it remains a collectible and fascinating piece for enthusiasts of Colt firearms and 1911 derivatives. It represents a unique attempt by Colt to modernize the revered 1911 design with then-contemporary trends, offering a blend of old-school craftsmanship and new-age functionality. Today, the Double Eagle is appreciated both for its rarity and its role in Colt’s evolving approach to service pistol design.
