Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
S&W Centennial is a family of revolvers made by Smith & Wesson on the "J-Frame." Depending upon the caliber, the cylinder holds either 5 (9x19mm Parabellum, .38 Special +P, and .357 Magnum), 6 (.32 H&R Magnum), 7 (.22 Magnum), or 8 (.22 LR) cartridges. Centennials feature a fully enclosed (internal) hammer, which makes them Double Action Only (DAO) firearms. Like all other "J-frame" Smith & Wesson revolvers, they have a swing-out cylinder. Centennial models have been made in different versions like PD "Personal Defense," LS "Lady Smith," and M&P "Military & Police."
The Model 42 was released in 1952 as the Airweight Centennial but was changed in 1957 to the Model 42. The gun had the same design as the Model 40, except the frame was made of an aluminum alloy, resulting in a lower weight than the Model 40. The Model 42 was discontinued in 1974.

The Centennial Aireweight, also known as the Model 042, was the first model of a full line of Centennial revolvers in alloy frames. The reintroduction of the Centennial series began with the Model 640, which has a stainless steel frame, followed by the Model 642 and the 042. The 042 model is available with a matte or polished blue finish and features a JA frame with a 312" smooth trigger, 5-shot fluted steel cylinder with a nominal length of 1.53", alloy frame with 2" steel barrel and concealed hammer, and is fitted with an Uncle Mikes Combat grip. This model is a transition model and is not Airweight marked. It has a 1/8" serrated ramp front sight with a square notch rear, and the serial number is laser-etched under the top strap on some examples. This model does not have the original design grip safety and is marked "MOD.042." It uses a floating firing pin fixed in the frame and a flat-face hammer instead of a hammer with a hammer nose, a feature that all other Centennial models will have. Some variations will have a MOD 642 over-stamp in the yoke cut. It is speculated that the 642 had color and finish problems and were blued and over-stamped to save frames with color differences. It is worth noting that this model was never cataloged. The Model 042 was produced in 1992 and early 1993, with a total of 4415 units.
