The Smith & Wesson Model 4506 is a third-generation semi-automatic pistol from the 4500 series of handguns, chambered in .45 ACP. With the addition of special springs, it can also accommodate the more powerful .45 Super cartridge. Constructed almost entirely from stainless steel, the 4506 is built to withstand harsh weather conditions, making it an excellent choice for durability and longevity in various environments. The pistol features a traditional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) system, where the first shot can be fired in double-action mode if the hammer is uncocked (such as when the safety is engaged), while each subsequent shot is fired in single-action mode. This combination allows for versatility in the handling and operation of the firearm. The Xenoy wrap-around grips provide a solid and comfortable hold, with options for either a curved or straight backstrap. The 4506 was produced from 1988 to 1999, and during its production run, it gained a reputation for reliability and ruggedness.

The Model 4506-1 is a later, modified version that incorporated design changes made to strengthen the pistol’s frame, particularly for the 10mm Auto version, the Model 1006. Key modifications included changes to the slide manufacturing process and a shift in the trigger guard from square to round, improving ergonomics and functionality. Over time, the hammer and trigger were transitioned from a flash chrome finish to a blued finish, and the S&W roll marks were replaced with laser etching for a cleaner, more modern appearance. Like other third-generation Smith & Wesson semi-automatics, the 4506 features a combination safety lever and decocker mounted on the slide, along with a plunger-type firing pin safety, magazine disconnect, and a pivoting spring-actuated external extractor. These features contribute to the pistol’s safety and performance, making it a reliable and versatile option for both duty and personal use.
