Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson 5900 pistol series refers to a set of S&W "Third-Generation" semi-automatic pistols, all chambered for 9x19mm. Due to the popularity of the 9mm cartridge, the 5900s were a large series that consisted of twelve variants. The normal variants consisted of the 5903, 5904, 5905, 5906, 5924, 5926, 5943, 5944, 5946, 5967, and the budget versions: the 910 and 915.
The Smith & Wesson 5903 is a variation of the 5906. Production of the 5903 began in 1990 and continued until 1999. The only real difference between the 5903 and the 5906 is the 5903 has an aluminum alloy frame as opposed to the stainless steel frame of the 5906. It is usually easy to differentiate the two by observing the color contrast between the slide and frame. Like the 5906, the 5903 also existed in a TSW variant, and an SSV (Short Slide Variation) is another rare variant of the 5903 that combined the compact 6904 slide and barrel with leftover 5903 frames that had the squared trigger guard.
