The Smith & Wesson Model 617 is a double-action revolver chambered in .22 Long Rifle, built on the square butt stainless K target frame with 3 screws. It features a 6-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.62 inches and is offered with a 4-inch, 6-inch, or 8-3/8-inch full lug ribbed barrel. The revolver also includes a straight 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap, a .312" smooth combat or .400" serrated trigger, and smooth combat wood grips adorned with S&W medallions. It comes equipped with a .375" semi-target or .500" target hammer and a pinned Patridge front sight paired with a micrometer click adjustable rear sight. A limited run of 4-inch and 6-inch models without the full lug was produced in 1991 as a special for Ashland Shooting Supplies.

In 1996, Smith & Wesson introduced a variation with an aluminum alloy 10-shot fluted cylinder, built on a stainless steel K target round butt frame with Hogue rubber grips featuring the S&W monogram. This version retained the 6-inch full lug barrel, .375" semi-target hammer, .312" smooth combat trigger, and was drilled and tapped for a scope mount. It included a 1/8" pinned black Patridge front sight with a micrometer click adjustable rear sight, and the revolver maintained the 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap. Due to poor sales of the alloy cylinder version, the model was reintroduced in October 1997 with an all-stainless steel 10-shot cylinder. Notably, a rare, one-of-a-kind prototype was made by the Performance Center, featuring a 6-inch slabside barrel cut for scope mounting and an alloy cylinder, bearing the serial number JMS2002. This unique revolver was produced with the Performance Center trademark on the frame and a Patridge dovetail front sight, but it was never put into full production. The Model 617 has been in production since approximately 1989.
