According to a letter submitted by one of the original owners to Colt Customer Service, the revolver in question was returned under warranty for adjustment or repair. The firearm was initially purchased from a dealer in California through a New York-based intermediary. The issue addressed was the looseness of the cylinder on the cylinder pin, with a request made to tighten the cylinder. The letter further detailed that, according to Colt's records, the revolver was originally finished in blue with color case hardening. However, the revolver was entirely blue, suggesting that the Colt Custom Shop had altered the finish for the original purchaser. The letter also noted that if the repairs to the cylinder and pin required refinishing, the pistol could either be restored to its original blue and color case hardened finish or retained in its current blue finish. As it stands today, the revolver was refinished to its original blue and color case hardened configuration.

According to the letter and receipt associated with this revolver, several customizations were performed to enhance its performance and appearance. The modifications included a Gunsling action job, which was specifically designed to adjust the trigger pull to a precise 3.5 pounds. Additionally, the forcing cone was recut to improve accuracy and overall function. The hammer was subjected to color case hardening, giving it a distinctive finish. Fire blue screws were also added, contributing to the pistol’s aesthetic appeal. Finally, the revolver underwent a test firing of 20 rounds to ensure that all modifications were functioning as intended and that the firearm met performance standards.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (also known as the Model P, Peacemaker, M1873, Single Action Army, SAA) is a single action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six metallic cartridges. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1873 by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, today Colt’s Manufacturing Company, and adopted as the standard military service revolver until 1892. It is perhaps the most copied, fraudulently modified to replicate an original Colt SAA, than any other revolver made.

The Third Generation began in 1976 characterized by a change in barrel thread pitch and a solid cylinder bushing replacing the removable/replaceable part from the first and second generations. This Generation of production began with Ser. no. 80,000SA, and reached 99,999SA in 1978. At this point, the SA suffix changed to a prefix beginning with SA01,001. Serialization reached SA99,999 during 1993. In 1994, production resumed with the increase in popularity of “Cowboy Action Shooting.” These models are known either as "Late Third Generation" or sometimes Fourth Generation with the serial number convention changing yet again starting with S02001A and continuing with the "S" prefix and "A" suffix to 2009. Colt currently offers the Single Action Army in one of two finishes: either an all-nickel or blued with color case-hardened frame; in the traditional three barrel lengths: 4¾", 5½" and 7½"; and six chamberings: 32-20, 38-40, 44-40, .38 Special, 357 Magnum or 45 Colt; a total of 36 variations.

The .44-40 WCF caliber, a historic and widely recognized cartridge, was officially discontinued in 2011. Despite its discontinuation, this caliber, along with others such as the .32-30 WCF, .38-40 WCF, .38 Spl, and .44 Spl, remains available through special order from the Colt Custom Shop.
