Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .38 Combat Masterpiece was introduced by Smith & Wesson in late 1949 and was designed as a holster version of Smith & Wesson's famous K-Masterpiece series which had been produced in .22, .32, and .38 calibers. Because of the demand for shorter barrels of these famous target guns, Smith & Wesson made a four-inch version, which was called Combat Masterpieces and featured a combat-style ramp front sight rather than the Patridge style used on the Target series.
In 1950 when the factory first cataloged this model, they produced it in .22, .32 & .38 special calibers; however, the .32 caliber was dropped almost immediately and was never cataloged, with less than five hundred units ever being manufactured, In 1958 when model numbers were assigned to all the various Smith & Wesson handguns, the .38 Combat Masterpieces were designated the Model 15. The addition of the 2-inch Heavy Barrel to this model occurred in 1964 as the result of a US Air Force order.
In 1985 after the Model 14 had been discontinued this model became available with a 4, 6, and 8 3/8 inch heavy barrel. The Model 15 nomenclature was retained because of its popularity with police departments when in reality the revolver was the same as the discontinued Model 14 and was just marketed under the Model 15 name.
