Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 52 is a semi-automatic target pistol celebrated for its exceptional accuracy and fine craftsmanship. Chambered exclusively for the .38 Special flush-seated wadcutter cartridge, it was purpose-built for precision competition and adapted from the Model 39 frame, modified to accommodate the rimmed cartridge while maximizing reliability and accuracy. Early examples incorporated a set screw to disable double-action operation, rendering the pistol single-action only—an ideal configuration for bullseye shooting. The Model 52 was equipped with a 5-inch barrel and a single-stack magazine designed specifically to feed wadcutters smoothly. Its sighting arrangement consisted of a 1/8-inch Patridge front sight on a ramped base paired with a fully adjustable rear sight for windage and elevation. The trigger system was one of the pistol’s defining features: a .365-inch wide serrated trigger with an adjustable overtravel stop, combined with a .260-inch serrated hammer, delivering a crisp and consistent let-off. Finished in deep blue and fitted with checkered walnut grips, the pistol offered both refined aesthetics and excellent handling characteristics.

Weighing approximately 41 ounces unloaded, the Model 52 balanced superbly for sustained target shooting. Introduced in 1961, the no-dash Model 52 was produced in limited numbers (about 3,500 units) until 1963, when the improved 52-1 appeared with an upgraded extractor. The final production version, the 52-2, was introduced in 1971 with a strengthened barrel bushing and remained in production until 1993. Serial numbers began at 50,000 in the Automatic Pistol series. Today, the Model 52 is widely regarded as one of the most accurate semi-automatic pistols ever produced in .38 Special, and it remains a benchmark for competitive target shooting.
