Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Many experts in the field of handguns consider the .380 ACP cartridge, also known as 9x17mm, 9mm Kurz, and 9mm Corto, to be the absolute minimum caliber acceptable for self-defense. However, some may argue that even smaller calibers, such as the .32 ACP, have proved effective in self-defense situations. It is also said that a hit with a .22 beats a miss with a .44 Magnum. The .380 ACP has been in use since 1908, and it is no surprise that Beretta, the world's oldest gunmaker, produces two of the finest guns chambered for the round. Meet the Beretta Models 84F and 85F, from the company's Cheetah series. Beretta introduced the Model 84 in 1975, but it wasn't until the 1990s that the company named it and other pistols in the series "Cheetah." This is a traditional double-action semiautomatic pistol that has the unique feature of allowing for cocked-and-locked carry. This feature is appreciated by fans of single-action autopistols like the M1911 and Browning Hi-Power because the manual safety is frame-mounted and swiped downward into the Fire position. Unlike the slide-mounted, upward-to-fire, decocking safety lever that you typically see on traditional direct action autos such as the Beretta 92FS and Smith & Wesson Model 39, it does not de-cock the hammer. The Model 84 is equipped with an open-top slide that is also used in Beretta 92 and M1951 Brigadier, which helps to avoid jams. The Cheetah, like other "pocket pistols" or "mouse guns," uses direct blowback action. Similar to 92F, the 84F has a lightweight aluminum alloy frame. It can hold up to 13+1 rounds in its double-stack magazine. The gun has a barrel length of 3.81 inches, an overall length of 6.8 inches, and a weight of 23 ounces.
