Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), often referred to as the Model P, Peacemaker, or M1873, is one of the most iconic firearms in history. It is a single-action revolver with a six-round, rotating cylinder designed to hold metallic cartridges. Originally crafted by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, now Colt’s Manufacturing Company, the SAA was created to meet the requirements of the U.S. military's 1873 service revolver trials. Upon its adoption, the SAA became the standard-issue sidearm for the U.S. Army and remained in service until 1892. Its design, known for its rugged reliability and ease of use, made it incredibly popular and has been widely imitated, with countless replicas and modifications emerging over the years. Its enduring legacy is reflected in the fact that the SAA has been the most copied revolver in history, often modified to mimic the original Colt SAA in ways that sometimes obscure its true origins.

The Colt SAA saw significant changes over its long production run, particularly with the introduction of the Third Generation in 1976. This new iteration was marked by notable technical adjustments, including a change in the barrel thread pitch and the introduction of a solid cylinder bushing that replaced the removable parts used in previous generations. The Third Generation models began with serial number 80,000SA and continued until 1978 when the format switched, using an "SA" prefix for serial numbers starting with SA01,001. By 1993, production had reached SA99,999. In 1994, the revival of interest in the Colt SAA was driven in part by the growth of "Cowboy Action Shooting," leading to a resumption of production. This period saw the development of "Late Third Generation" or sometimes "Fourth Generation" models, marked by yet another change in serial number formatting, beginning with S02001A and continuing until 2009. Colt continues to produce the SAA today, offering it in various configurations, including two finishes—an all-nickel option or a blued version with a color case-hardened frame. The revolver is available in three traditional barrel lengths (4¾", 5½", and 7½") and can be chambered in one of six calibers, including .45 Colt, .38 Special, and .357 Magnum, among others, offering a total of 36 variations for collectors and enthusiasts.
