Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 686 Stainless-Steel Distinguished Combat Magnum was introduced in 1981. It was designed for both law enforcement and sportsmen wanting a .357 Magnum with a K frame grip, having a considerable heavy weight. This insured making controllability easier with full Magnum loads. The L frame was the first handgun assigned to Smith & Wesson's new serial number series. The three alpha characters and four numerals. The beginning serial number of the Model 686 began with serial number AAA0095. From that point on, the serial numbers are intermixed with all variations of the L frame models the 586, 581, and 681. The S&W Performance Center has produced a number of special runs using the 686 platform.
