Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Redhawk is a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) revolver introduced in 1979 by Sturm, Ruger & Company. As the first large-bore double-action revolver from Ruger, the Redhawk was designed by Roy Melcher and Harry Sefried, who previously worked at High Standard Manufacturing Company and had designed the High Standard Sentinel revolver. The Redhawk was announced in 1979 and began shipping in 1980, initially chambered in .44 Magnum. It featured a square butt grip, adjustable sights, and barrel lengths of 5.5 inches and 7.5 inches, available in either blue or stainless steel finishes. Although the Redhawk's grip profile and sideplate-free construction resembled the earlier Ruger Security-Six, it was an entirely new design, built with a larger and heavier frame.

Engineered to handle the heaviest .44 Magnum loads, the Redhawk featured a unique triple lock system, locking the cylinder at the front, rear, and bottom, a feature previously seen only on Smith & Wesson's triple lock .44 Hand Ejector design. Sefried noted that this design would "last almost indefinitely." To reduce parts and simplify the mechanism, the Redhawk used a single coil spring to power both the hammer and trigger, resulting in a slightly heavier single-action trigger pull. The revolver’s forward ramp sights offered four interchangeable sight inserts, while its rear sights were fully adjustable with a white outline. Available with optional scope mounts and rings, the Redhawk holds six or eight rounds depending on the caliber and is offered with barrel lengths ranging from 4-inches to 7.5-inches. Originally offered only in .44 Magnum, it was later available in .41 Magnum, .357 Magnum, and .45 Colt, with a dual-caliber .45 ACP/.45 Colt version introduced in 2015. Though the Redhawk remains in production, it is now favored by many shooters for its more compact frame compared to the Super Redhawk, especially for hunting and self-protection when scopes are not required.
