The Colt SF-VI, introduced in the mid-1990s, was a response to the need for a more affordable and modern replacement for the venerable "D" frame revolvers, such as the Detective Special, which Colt had discontinued in 1986. The SF-VI was designed as a small-frame, stainless steel revolver aimed at providing a high-quality, durable firearm that could meet the demands of both law enforcement and civilian users. The design retained the approximate size and shape of the older "D" frame revolvers but incorporated a transfer bar safety-ignition system that had first been used in Colt’s Mark III series of the 1960s. This system, which included a spring-loaded firing pin in the frame, offered enhanced safety features compared to the older design, which lacked a transfer bar system. The SF-VI, often considered a scaled-down version of the Colt King Cobra, utilized the same vee spring system found in earlier "D" frame models, keeping production costs lower while maintaining reliable operation.

The Colt SF-VI featured a 2-inch barrel and was chambered in .38 Special, with a few units produced with a rare 4-inch barrel. The SF-VI had a satin brushed stainless steel finish or, in some cases, a bright polished finish, which gave it a clean, professional appearance. The revolver was known for its exceptionally light double-action trigger, which, although praised for smoothness, led to some users experiencing "short stroking" issues due to slow trigger reset. Colt responded to this by offering to replace the trigger return spring with a heavier version to remedy the problem. The grips were rubber Pachmayr "Compac" replicas featuring gold or silver Colt medallions. Despite its brief production run between 1995 and 1996, the SF-VI garnered attention for its innovative design, though it was eventually succeeded by the Colt DS-II as the company phased out the SF-VI to clear out the remaining Detective Special models in distribution. The SF-VI remains a noteworthy chapter in Colt's revolver history, combining modern features with traditional Colt craftsmanship.
