The Smith & Wesson 637 was reintroduced in 1996 with significant design changes and updated features. This particular example was produced in 1996, which makes it a first-year production model!

The Smith & Wesson Model 637 is a double-action revolver chambered in .38 S&W Special, originally introduced as a special production run of approximately 500 units in 1989. Built on a round-butt alloy J-frame with three screws, it features a 1-7/8-inch barrel, a 5-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.53 inches, and walnut Magna-style grips bearing S&W medallions. The frame is made from a clear anodized fuse alloy, paired with a stainless steel cylinder and barrel, and equipped with a 1/8-inch serrated front ramp and notch-cut rear sight. The revolver also includes a .312-inch smooth satin-finished trigger, a .240-inch satin hammer, a contoured thumbpiece, and a new-style yoke retention system. Though the sideplate appears to be stainless steel, it is an alloy. The revolver weighs approximately 13.5 ounces and was not cataloged at the time. The S&W trademark appears both under the thumbpiece and on the sideplate. The Model 637 was reintroduced in 1996 with significant design changes and updated features.

Now built on the J-Magnum frame, it retained the three-screw configuration and was rated for .38 Special +P ammunition. Enhancements included a Metal Injection Molded (MIM) flat-face hammer with a floating firing pin, a new MIM thumbpiece, and a slightly longer frame featuring a cylinder opening of 1.345" x 1.732". The 5-shot fluted cylinder was lengthened to a nominal 1.59 inches, and the yoke was extended to 2.058 inches. Additional updates included a redesigned extractor system and changes to the MIM hollow trigger, hammer, and internal lockwork, which appeared in various production batches. This version had a frosted stainless finish and came equipped with Uncle Mike’s Boot Grips on a round butt frame with a smooth backstrap. It maintained the .312-inch smooth trigger and was cataloged with a 2-inch barrel, though the actual barrel length is 1.86 inches, and the frame thickness is 0.538 inches.
Beginning with the -1 production series, the revolver was marked with "Airweight" on the frame. In September 1997, S&W began including Master Trigger Locks, and by 2002, the revolver incorporated an internal lock system and a simplified two-line address: "SPFLD, MA S&W U.S.A." Many -2 variants feature the S&W trademark on both the frame and the sideplate, with the serial number located above the trigger guard. Additionally, Magna-Porting was available through various distributors. Production of the Model 637 spans from its special 1989 run through its ongoing manufacture following the 1996 reintroduction.
