Introduced in 1990, the Colt Anaconda was a significant addition to Colt's portfolio, marking their return to large-frame double-action revolvers after several decades. Designed to compete with established .44 Magnum revolvers like the Smith & Wesson Model 29, Ruger Redhawk and Blackhawk, and the Dan Wesson Model 44, the Anaconda was chambered in the powerful .44 Magnum cartridge, as well as .45 Long Colt. Built on Colt's heavy ‘AA’ frame, the Anaconda featured a robust construction, stainless steel finish, and a full-length under-barrel ejection-rod lug, making it a standout in the revolver market. While it initially faced accuracy issues, Colt quickly corrected these with improvements to the barrel, and the Anaconda earned a reputation for its superior accuracy, often touted as one of the most precise .44 Magnum revolvers of its time. It was primarily marketed to sports enthusiasts and hunters, as its large frame made it impractical for law enforcement or concealed carry purposes.

A particularly rare variant of the Colt Anaconda was the PDT model, which was a limited production run of the 8" barrel model that received porting and trigger work directly from the Colt Custom Shop before being shipped. However, after nearly a decade of production, Colt discontinued the Anaconda in 1999, alongside several other double-action revolvers.
