Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger 10/22 Magnum, introduced in 1998, was a unique and relatively short-lived variant of the iconic Ruger 10/22 platform, chambered for the more powerful .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) cartridge. While it shared the familiar aesthetics and modular design of its .22 LR sibling, the 10/22 Magnum was engineered with reinforced components to handle the increased pressures and velocities of the .22 WMR round. It featured a heavier bolt, a redesigned blowback system, and a robust steel receiver to ensure safe and reliable cycling. The rifle came standard with a 10-round rotary magazine—similar in appearance to the original 10/22 magazine but internally different to accommodate the longer cartridge. Outfitted with a stainless steel barrel and often paired with a hardwood or synthetic stock, the 10/22 Magnum offered improved range and stopping power over the standard 10/22, making it suitable for small to medium game hunting and pest control where extra ballistic performance was needed.

Despite its appeal, the 10/22 Magnum faced several challenges that ultimately led to its discontinuation in 2006. The increased bolt mass and blowback action, while functional, made the cycling of the .22 WMR cartridge less consistent than the tried-and-true .22 LR version, especially with certain types of ammunition. Additionally, the rimfire magnum market was more niche, and the cost of .22 WMR ammunition, combined with limited aftermarket support, further narrowed its audience. Nonetheless, the rifle developed a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciated the added power and retained the reliability and familiarity of the 10/22 platform. Today, the Ruger 10/22 Magnum is a sought-after collector’s item and a cult favorite for those who want magnum performance in a semi-automatic rimfire. Its rarity and distinctive place in Ruger’s history highlight the brand’s willingness to innovate within a classic design, even if the market ultimately proved too narrow to sustain long-term production.
