Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger M77 is a bolt-action rifle designed by Jim Sullivan and introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1968. Developed as a modernized version of the Mauser K98, it features a traditional two-lugged bolt with a claw extractor. Ruger used investment casting for cost efficiency, and the rifle quickly gained popularity, partly due to the Mauser-style extractor and its appeal to hunters, including an endorsement from writer Jack O'Connor. Bill Ruger’s design focused on simplifying components like the ejector and safety system, with a two-position tang safety and a plunger-style ejector. In 1991, the M77 was reworked and reintroduced as the Model 77 Mark II. This redesign featured several key improvements, including hammer-forged barrels, a three-position safety, a true controlled-round feed action, and a fixed Mauser-style blade ejector. The adjustable trigger was replaced with a non-adjustable version, and various finishes and stock materials were offered, including blued, stainless steel, and synthetic options. The Mark II variant further refined the M77, maintaining the claw extractor and adding modern features for enhanced reliability and performance.
