The Colt 1991 Series was introduced in 1991, during a period when the market was seeing a growing number of commercial 1911 pistols and imported copies. To stand out, Colt designed the 1991 Series to remain true to the original M1911A1 while incorporating the slide and internal features of the Mk IV Series 80. This combination provided a more “mil-spec” 1911 that could compete with both domestic manufacturers, such as Springfield Armory, and imported pistols, including models from Norinco. The Colt 1991 Series offered a utilitarian, service-oriented version of the legendary 1911 platform at a more accessible price, showcasing its military heritage and making it a notable addition to any collection.
