The SIG-Sauer P228 pistol was developed from the larger framed SIG-Sauer P226 pistol in 1989. This happened in the same way that the earlier P225 pistol had grown from the P220 – basically, some length was chopped from the barrel and slide, as well as from the grip. The overall shape of the P228 was slightly more rounded, making it more suited for concealed carry. In 1991, it was adopted by the US Armed Forces as the M11 pistol and is still issued to Military Police and some other units. The P228 is also a highly popular police and civilian sidearm and is widely issued to law enforcement forces in Europe and the USA.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service pistol manufactured by SIG Sauer. This model is available in four different types of ammunition: 9×19mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, or .22 Long Rifle. It operates like the SIG Sauer P220 but is designed to use higher capacity, double-stack magazines instead of the single-stack magazines used in the P220. The P226 itself has spawned further sub-variants; the P228 and P229 are both compact versions of the double-stack P226 design, while the P224 is a subcompact variant. The SIG Sauer P226 and its variants are in service with numerous law enforcement and military organizations worldwide.

The P228 is a smaller version of the P226 currently used by various law enforcement agencies and the United States Armed Forces, where it goes by the name M11. This pistol features a shorter slide and barrel than the P226. Unlike the P226, the P228 is only available in 9×19mm Parabellum with a 10 or 13-round magazine; however, it can also accommodate P226 15—or 20-round magazines. Additionally, the P228 can be fitted with aftermarket magazines that extend its capacity to 15 rounds.

The P228 is one of the few P-series guns discontinued by Sig, joining the ranks of the less commonly-known DAO P224, the single-stack P225 (P6), and the 10+1 shot .45 ACP P227, the latter was briefly a favorite with various state police agencies. While Sig quietly resurrected the P228 from 2004-06 with a Nitron slide and a Custom Shop Limited Edition circulated at the same time, the "old-school" model with a carbon steel slide, rounded trigger guard, and smooth, non-railed dust cover was firmly a child of the 1990s. Even the commemorative M11 launched by Sig recently as an ode to the wonder from the Desert Storm, Bosnia, and Mogadishu era has a P228 profile that has been much updated. Still, the lines of the P228 are smooth, its history one of long service, and its legacy one that holds up today. While "outdated" in some respects, they still work, have tons of accessories, holsters, and spare parts available, and will likely continue to be a common sight on shooting ranges around the world for generations to come.
