Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1999, Smith & Wesson unveiled a groundbreaking revolver at the annual SHOT Show that stood apart from anything they had previously released. Combining the lightweight alloy and titanium construction of their AirLite series with the robust design of an L-frame, the new revolvers introduced the innovative enclosed "Centennial" hammer—an exclusive feature as the only non-J-frame Centennial models ever produced by Smith & Wesson. These revolvers were offered in two distinct variants: the 7-shot .38 Special Model 242 and the 5-shot .44 Special Model 296. The Model 296, in particular, was a true marvel, weighing a mere 18.9 ounces while boasting a 2" round-butt barrel. Despite its lightweight construction, the Model 296 delivered the powerful punch of the .44 Special in a medium-frame package, offering the perfect balance of stopping power, portability, and ease of concealment. Its snag-free design made it ideal for concealed carry, and it was even lighter than a steel J-frame, catering to the growing demand for carry-friendly big-bore revolvers as concealed carry laws were liberalizing across the U.S. However, the revolver’s unique design came with a level of complexity that affected production. The two-piece barrel construction and the intricate machining of the titanium cylinder made the Model 296 a challenging firearm to manufacture, which contributed to Smith & Wesson's decision to discontinue it after 2001.
