Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The K-Frame revolver is one of the most important innovations in Smith & Wesson history and was built specifically to handle the .38 S&W Special cartridge. Since its introduction in 1899, the K-Frame has been a favorite for military and police professionals as well as target shooters and enthusiasts. In 1970 the Model 66 K-framed 6-shot .357 Magnum/.38 Special revolver was introduced as the stainless steel version of the Model 19 and the 6" barrel is somewhat a scarcity of these classic examples.
The first Stainless Steel Combat Magnum, or Model 66 as it is better known, was manufactured on May 5, 1970 with serial number K949100. This model was officially announced by the company until one year later on July 8, 1971, when the company began shipments of its newest Combat Magnum. Shortly after the first four inch models were in shooters' hands, orders were received for a round-butt version similar to the two and half inch Model 19. However, Smith & Wesson was operating at full capacity and could not expand its line of stainless guns to accommodate production of a two and a half inch model 66 until 1974. With this barrel length available, the factory found they were producing a full line of stainless steel revolvers that were truly a peace officer's dream.
