Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 66 Sporting Rifle, also known as the “Yellowboy,” is a legendary firearm that played a pivotal role in shaping the American frontier. Introduced shortly after the Civil War, this lever-action rifle earned its nickname from its distinctive brass-colored receiver, which was revolutionary at the time. As the first rifle to officially bear the Winchester name, the Model 1866 quickly became a favorite among pioneers, cowboys, and settlers pushing westward. With its reliable lever-action mechanism and rugged build, the Yellowboy cemented Winchester’s reputation as a premier American firearms manufacturer. Chambered here in .45 Long Colt and featuring a 24-inch octagonal barrel, blade front sight, and adjustable rear sight, the rifle’s design is both functional and historically faithful—ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of the Old West.

This particular example is far more than just a modern replica—it is a rare and highly coveted commemorative piece. Produced by Legendary Commemoratives of Cheyenne, Wyoming, it is part of the Millennium 2000 Special Edition series, made specifically to honor each of the 50 U.S. states. Only 10 rifles were made for each state, and this rifle is number 9 of 10 created for Oregon, complete with a certificate of authenticity and a matching Winchester belt buckle. The rifle remains in pristine, unfired condition, with the action factory-sealed and never levered, enhancing its value and appeal as a true collector's item. Its finish is an eye-catching 24kt gold, complemented by deeply engraved walnut furniture, symbolizing both the craftsmanship and the reverence for the subject it commemorates. The engravings on this Oregon edition are rich with symbolism and detail. The left side of the buttstock features a detailed map of the United States with Oregon highlighted and labeled “The Beaver State,” including an engraved beaver within the outline and surrounded by a barbed wire circle—an homage to the state’s frontier heritage. The right side of the forearm features a bear and “State of Oregon” banner set among floral engravings, while the gold-coated buttplate bears the Rod of Asclepius and atomic model symbol, possibly reflecting Oregon’s contributions to science and medicine. “Millennium 2000” banners are engraved on both sides of the barrel, and additional floral engravings appear on the receiver, which also includes a circular “Millennium 2000” motif set against a mountain backdrop. Limited-edition markings such as “State of Oregon 9 of 10” and “329 of 500" (indication the 10 per state) on the tang further underscore this rifle’s exclusivity. Altogether, this Model 66 commemorative rifle is not just a firearm—it’s a finely crafted tribute to history, heritage, and the state of Oregon.
