Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), also known as the Model P, Peacemaker, or M1873, is a single-action revolver handgun. It was designed in 1872 by Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company (today Colt’s Manufacturing Company) for the U.S. government service revolver trials. It was adopted as the standard-issue sidearm of the U.S. Army in 1873. While the Army began transitioning to other sidearms in the 1890s, the SAA remained in use for some years thereafter. The revolver has been produced in over 30 calibers and multiple barrel lengths, and its overall appearance has remained largely unchanged since its introduction. Production has been halted and resumed several times, reflecting ongoing demand. Commonly referred to as the “Colt Peacemaker” in marketing materials, the SAA became an iconic symbol of the American West, favored by ranchers, lawmen, and outlaws alike. Today, it is primarily purchased by collectors and historical reenactors, and its design has inspired numerous replicas and similar models from other manufacturers.

Beginning in 1999, Colt introduced the Colt Cowboy, a more affordable variant of the Single Action Army, featuring a modern transfer-bar safety mechanism that allows it to be safely carried with the hammer resting on a loaded chamber. The Cowboy was offered with barrel lengths of 4.75", 5.5", and 7.5"; the 7.5" model was discontinued in 1999, while the 4.75" variant was briefly reintroduced in 2002 before production ceased entirely in 2003.
