Item Description

Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this Limited Edition semi-automatic shotgun today for a penny-start auction…this is the Remington 1100 "Sam M. Walton Limited Edition!"

The Remington 1100 “Sam M. Walton Limited Edition” shotguns were produced for Walmart stores at a reduced cost and available in 12- and 20-gauge variants. They feature standard specifications and wooden components. A total of 5,000 units were manufactured for each gauge in late 2001. The serial numbers are nearly identical, differing only after the prefix, where "12" or "20" indicates the gauge. The 28-gauge only had a run of approximately 1,000 units produced in 2001 as well. The serial prefix WM indicates the gauge.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced by Remington Arms in 1963, the Remington Model 1100 is a gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun renowned for its smooth operation and reduced recoil. The shotgun utilizes gas bled from ports near the fore-end of the barrel to drive a steel action sleeve around the magazine tube, which connects to the bolt carrier and moves it rearward to eject spent shells. As the bolt moves back, a new shell is released from the magazine and the action spring in the stock pushes the bolt forward to chamber the fresh shell. The standard Model 1100 handles 2+3/4-inch shells without adjustment, while Magnum versions accommodate both 2+3/4 and 3-inch shells interchangeably.

Designed by Wayne Leek and Robert Kelley, the Model 1100 succeeded the Model 58 and Model 878 shotguns, which had themselves replaced the recoil-operated Model 11-48—a design rooted in John Browning's original long recoil action seen in the Model 11 and Browning Auto-5. By 1983, the Model 1100 had become the best-selling autoloading shotgun in U.S. history in terms of dollar sales. In the mid-1980s, Remington offered a more economical version, the Sportsman 12 Auto, which featured simpler birch stocks and less elaborate rollmarking, and was available at retailers like Target, Kmart, and Walmart. Although the Sportsman 12 Auto shared the same parts and interchangeability as the standard Model 1100, it was discontinued in 1987 alongside the introduction of the Model 11-87 and the Model 870 Express.
