Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present one of the best-selling pump-action shotguns in firearm history for a penny-start auction; this is the Remington 870 Wingmaster!

The Remington 870 Field Wingmaster in 16 gauge is a classic pump-action shotgun that delivers a perfect balance of power, weight, and handling, long admired by upland hunters and traditionalists. Originally introduced in the early 1950s, the 16-gauge Wingmaster was built on a true-to-gauge receiver, offering an ideal middle ground between the recoil of a 12-gauge and the lighter payload of a 20. Despite its popularity through the mid-20th century, changing market preferences led to its discontinuation by the 1980s, when Remington ceased regular production of 16-gauge 870 Wingmasters. After a decades-long hiatus, Remington recognized renewed interest in the 16 gauge—particularly among upland bird hunters and vintage shotgun enthusiasts—and reintroduced the 870 Wingmaster in 16 gauge in the early 2000s as part of a limited production run. These reissued models maintained the same craftsmanship and aesthetics, including high-polish blued steel, walnut furniture, and smooth twin-action bars, reaffirming the 870 Wingmaster’s status as one of the most reliable and cherished American shotguns ever made.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington 870 Field Wingmaster is one of the most iconic and enduring pump-action shotguns in American firearms history. Introduced in 1950, the 870 series was designed to replace Remington’s Model 31 and quickly gained a reputation for its rugged reliability, smooth action, and elegant finish. The Wingmaster variant represents the premium line within the 870 family, featuring a richly blued steel receiver, a high-gloss American walnut stock and fore-end, and a finely polished finish that sets it apart from its utilitarian siblings. Typically chambered in 12, 16, or 20 gauge, with various barrel lengths and fixed chokes tailored for field use, the 870 Wingmaster Field model is especially favored by upland bird hunters and waterfowlers who value both form and function in the field.

Functionally, the 870 Wingmaster is known for its twin-action bars that ensure reliable cycling and resistance to binding, making it a favorite among hunters and sport shooters alike. The Field model is equipped with a ventilated rib barrel and bead front sight for quick target acquisition and consistent shot placement. Its tubular magazine typically holds four rounds, offering ample firepower for most hunting applications. The Wingmaster’s combination of robust steel construction, smooth operation, and traditional craftsmanship has made it a trusted companion for generations of outdoorsmen. Today, well-maintained examples of the Remington 870 Field Wingmaster remain highly valued for their durability, shootability, and timeless appeal, continuing to set the standard for what a classic American field shotgun should be.
