Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1987, Ruger introduced the P85, the first pistol in its P-Series auto pistols. The P95, which was launched in 1996, was the company's first centerfire auto pistol with a polymer frame. The pistol made headlines and was featured on the covers of several gun magazines, including Shooting Times.

The pistol featured a 3.9-inch barrel, a three-dot sight system, and a polymer frame, which was described as an "injection-molded, custom-compounded, high-strength polymer with long-strand fiberglass filler." The frame was tested extensively for strength and durability and outperformed other brands of polymer-framed pistols and even steel-framed models for durability. Initially, the P95 had a blued or stainless-steel slide, double action only (DAO), or decocker mechanisms. Later, Ruger added an integral rail to the underside of the polymer frame.

The P95 was unique in operation in that when it fired, its barrel and slide would move rearward together for a short distance until an angled surface on the full-length recoil spring guide's integral camblock engaged the underlug on the barrel and cammed its breech end downward and out of engagement with the slide. The slide would then travel fully to the rear and eject the spent case. This camblock system was a new addition to Ruger's pistols in 1996. The pistol's magazine capacity was initially ten rounds but was increased to fifteen rounds in late 2005. Ruger also offered a variation of the P95 with manual safety. Production of the P95 continued until 2013, when Ruger discontinued it.
