Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger 77/17 is a bolt-action rimfire rifle introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 2002 as part of the company’s 77-series line to chamber Hornady’s then-new .17 HMR cartridge. Based on Ruger’s proven 77/22 action, it features a solid steel receiver with integral scope bases machined directly into the top of the receiver to accept Ruger’s proprietary rings, eliminating the need for separate drilled-and-tapped mounts. The two-lug bolt locks at the front and operates with a 90-degree throw, while a three-position safety allows the rifle to be carried safely with the bolt either locked or operable. Feeding is from a detachable, flush-fit rotary magazine holding nine rounds of .17 HMR (or six in later .17 Hornet and .17 WSM versions). Barrels are cold hammer-forged, offered in both sporter and heavy-varmint contours, with some later models factory-threaded and supplied with a thread protector.

The 77/17 has been produced with walnut, laminated, and synthetic stocks, along with various finishes such as blue, stainless, and Target Gray. Known for its precise machining, solid centerfire-like handling, and excellent accuracy, the Ruger 77/17 quickly earned a reputation among varmint and small-game hunters as one of the most refined .17-caliber bolt rifles on the market.
