Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Wildey Survivor is a semi-automatic, gas-operated, piston-driven, and magazine-fed pistol patented by Wildey Moor on November 2, 1976. The Wildey Firearms Company manufactured the Wildey pistol to fire high-pressure magnum cartridges, making it suitable as a hunting gun. The Wildey pistol predates Magnum Research’s Desert Eagle by nearly a decade. In the early 1970s, Wildey Moore had risen to prominence in the firearms industry while working for the Swedish defense contractor Carl Gustaf. Moore had been granted several firearms-related patents before introducing his big-bore pistol to Carl Gustaf. He pitched the idea of his large, gas-operated pistol to his employers, but they scoffed at the idea of anyone wanting such a powerful handgun.

In 1976, Moore ventured into business on his own, and he established Wildey Firearms Company in Cheshire, Connecticut. The same year, Moore was awarded a patent for the world’s first gas-operated, semi-automatic pistol named Wildey Survivor. The Wildey Survivor was incredibly unique for its time. It is equipped with a fixed barrel and incorporates a locking, rotating bolt. Three locking lugs are machined into the bolt face. When the gas piston-driven action slides forward, the locking lugs engage with recesses cut into the barrel extension. Moore designed the gas system to be fully adjustable because shooters may use various hand loads that react differently with the action. Completely closing the gas system allows the shooter to operate the slide entirely by hand.

The Wildey Survivor is capable of firing a variety of powerful magnum cartridges. The shooter can change barrels to fire .45-Winchester Magnum cartridges, .475-Wildey cartridges, or 9MM Winchester Magnum cartridges. The ability to fire these powerful cartridges allows the shooter to use the Wildey Survivor as a hunting weapon where local laws do not ban hunting with handguns. Moore envisioned his invention as an affordable alternative to the hunting rifle. However, the cost of manufacturing the Survivor pistol greatly outweighed the pistol’s affordability. The Wildey Survivor cost $389 to manufacture, which amounts approximately to a production cost of $1,200.

Sales for the Wildey Survivor were barely enough to keep Wildey Firearm Company in business. In 1985, Charles Bronson wielded a Wildey Survivor in his hit movie Death Wish 3, and the pistol’s popularity soared after its on-screen appearance. Wildey Moore continued making the Survivor in limited numbers until USA Firearms purchased Wildey Firearms Company and the rights to produce the pistol in 2011. The Wildey Survivor is still in production and available in the same chamberings offered by the Wildey Firearms Company, with the option of an eight-inch, ten-inch, or twelve-inch barrel. It can also be purchased chambered for the .44-AutoMag cartridge.
