The introduction of Benelli's Super Black Eagle to the American market in 1991 caused a sensation in the hunting community. This semi-automatic shotgun was chambered for the powerful 12-gauge, 3-1/2-inch magnum shell and could also handle 2-3/4-inch and 3-inch magnum hulls with ease, thanks to its simple, inertia drive action. The Super Black Eagle was also a stylish and lightweight option, typical of most Italian shotguns, but it came with a hefty price tag of around $1,000, which was unheard of for a semi-auto shotgun at the time. Despite this, the American hunting community couldn't get enough of the Super Black Eagle, and it quickly gained a cult following. Hunters would speak about its many virtues in hushed, reverent tones in the duck blinds and turkey woods across America.
