Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the 1980s, the Remington company recognized the necessity of designing a 12-gauge autoloading shotgun that could handle both 2 3/4- and three-inch shells interchangeably. This need was especially important for waterfowl hunting, where the use of larger, steel-shot pellets had led to a significant increase in the demand for three-inch Magnum shotshells with greater shell capacity.

In 1987, Remington launched a new autoloading shotgun called the Model 11-87 Premier. It is considered one of the most versatile 12-gauge autoloading shotguns ever made. The manufacturer claimed that it required no manual adjustment for different types of 12-gauge shotshells, from light 2 3/4-inch loads to three-inch Magnums, thanks to its new Pressure Compensating Gas System. The new Model 11-87 Premier had a range of internal improvements that increased its overall performance endurance by 50%, including a rust- and corrosion-resistant, stainless-steel magazine tube. Except for Deer Guns, all ll-87s came with vent-rib barrels as standard. The Model 11-87 Premier is available in a standard grade with 26-, 28-, or 30-inch vent-rib barrels that come with the Rem Choke system.
