Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Model 96 is a modern lever-action rifle introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1996 and produced until 2009. Designed to blend the traditional appeal of lever guns with modern features, it borrowed several components from the Ruger 10/22, including the reliable rotary magazine, holding 10 rounds in .22 LR, 9 in .22 WMR, and .17 HMR, and 4 in .44 Magnum. The series included four main variants: the 96/22 (.22 LR), 96/22M (.22 WMR), 96/17 (.17 HMR), and the 96/44 (.44 Magnum). All featured a smooth, short-throw lever action, cross-bolt safety, enclosed hammer mechanism, integral or dovetail scope mounts, and a hardwood stock. The rifles measured approximately 37.25 inches in length with an 18.5-inch barrel and weighed between 5.25 and 6.1 pounds, depending on caliber.

Though praised for its accuracy, smooth operation, and innovative design, the Model 96 series struggled commercially and was discontinued in 2009. It has since gained a following among collectors and shooters for its unique blend of classic lever-action handling and Ruger’s modern engineering.
