Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Built on the proven Remington® Model 700®, the CDL™ Bolt-Action Rifle has all the quality features for serious big game hunting, predator hunting, or informal target shooting. At the heart of the CDL is the famous Model 700 action that encloses the cartridge head in 3 rings of steel: the recessed bolt face, the chamber end of the barrel, and the front receiver ring. This design provides inherent strength while holding the cartridge in precise alignment with the bore for exceptional accuracy. The CDL comes with a traditional straight-comb American walnut stock, a right-handed cheekpiece, cut checkering, and a satin finish. The elegant stock has a black fore-end tip and grip cap, a recoil pad, and sling swivel studs. The carbon steel barrel and 1-piece receiver are deeply blued. A 2-position safety at the rear of the action is quick to operate with the thumb, and can also be gripped with the forefinger and thumb and moved extra quietly to the fire position. The bolt knob has 2-panel checkering for a non-slip hold while cycling the action. An externally adjustable X-Mark Pro® trigger allows shooters to find the desired pull according to their preference. The Remington Model 700 CDL Bolt-Action Rifle has a hinged floorplate for safe and easy unloading of the magazine and comes drilled and tapped for scope mounts.
The .35 Whelen is a powerful medium-bore rifle cartridge that does not require a magnum action or bolt-face. Its parent is the .30-06 Springfield, which is necked up to accept a bullet diameter of .358 in (9.1 mm). This cartridge is more powerful than its parent, especially in killing power on large game. However, with much wider availability and the higher BC (ballistic coefficient) .30 caliber bullets of today, the power gap between the two cartridges has been decreased. The 35 Whelen, now available in several factory rounds and factory chambered in several different rifles (although some gunsmiths still sell properly formed brass for it), has racked up a tremendous record all over the world, rivaling the 375 Holland and Holland in its effectiveness. It was originally designed, partially, as a substitute for the 375 H & H since rifles for it could be made up using inexpensive 30-06 actions rather than costly magnum-length Mauser Actions. It has killed, with aplomb and efficiency, all of the trophy animals in the world, except for the “Big Three” (elephant, rhinoceros, and cape buffalo.) It can be loaded down to 35 Remington speeds for light recoil and pot-shooting or loaded up to provide terrific stopping power--more than should ever be needed by a competent rifleman facing American big game.
