Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Beretta 682, also known by its variants such as the S682, 682 Gold, and 682 Gold E, is a competition-grade over-under shotgun manufactured by Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta in Gardone Val Trompia, Italy. Renowned for its use in sporting clays, trap, and skeet shooting, the 682 has undergone significant design changes over its production life, reflecting its evolution in response to the needs of competitive shooters.

Initially produced through at least 1994, the original version of the 682, often referred to as the "wide" or "large" frame 682, featured a broader receiver and was designated with model numbers like S682305T. Beretta later introduced a narrower receiver version of the 682, aligning its width with the 686 and 687 lines. This change included a revised choke system and reduced barrel weight, optimizing the shotgun for competitive use. Consequently, the newer models are known for their "narrow" frame, distinct from the older wide-frame versions.

A notable point of differentiation between the older and newer models is that wood components from the narrow 682, 686, or 687 do not fit the wide-frame S682. Replacement stocks for the wide-frame models must be custom-made, as the frame widths differ—1.525 inches (38.7 mm) for the narrow models versus 1.585 inches (40.3 mm) for the wide frames. Despite these differences, many parts are interchangeable, and barrel sets from narrow 682 shotguns can generally be used on wide-frame 682 shotguns. However, some issues, such as misalignment and malfunctioning ejectors, may occur. Newer 682 barrels might not fit older wide-frame models perfectly, leading to potential gaps and functional problems.

The primary rationale for these design modifications is believed to be weight reduction, which is crucial for Olympic competition shotguns. Beretta aimed to enhance the shotgun's performance and meet the specific demands of high-level shooting sports by narrowing the receiver and updating other features.
