Originally designed with the American market in mind, the HK USP (Universal Self-loading Pistol) has gained global acclaim for its accuracy and exceptional reliability. The design of the USP was heavily influenced by the preferences of U.S. law enforcement and military users, incorporating features reminiscent of the Government Model 1911 pistol. Each USP model features a fiber-reinforced polymer frame, reinforced with stainless steel inserts at stress and friction points, a design innovation pioneered by HK over 30 years ago with their VP70Z and P9S pistols.

A standout feature of the USP is its frame-mounted control lever, which combines the safety and decocking functions. This design provides quick and easy access compared to the slide-mounted safeties found on many other semi-automatic pistols. The USP employs a modified Browning-type action equipped with HK's patented recoil reduction system, which minimizes recoil effects on the pistol’s components and reduces the felt recoil for the shooter. This recoil reduction system, also used in the HK Mark 23 developed for U.S. Special Operations Command, operates effectively with any type of ammunition without requiring special adjustments or maintenance.
Additionally, the USP’s modular design allows for the control lever to be switched to the opposite side of the pistol, accommodating left-handed shooters, and enables conversion between various trigger/firing modes, including combination double-action/single-action (DA/SA) and double-action-only (DAO). The USP is available in nine different trigger/firing mode configurations and three calibers: 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, making it a versatile choice for various users.
