Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger M77 represents a milestone in bolt-action rifle design by Sturm, Ruger & Co., originating from the creative vision of Jim Sullivan during his tenure at Ruger. Developed primarily as a hunting rifle, it features a traditional Mauser K98-style two-lugged bolt with a claw extractor, embodying Ruger's commitment to robust functionality and craftsmanship. It was introduced to the U.S. market in 1968 after extensive development led by Sullivan and influenced by Bill Ruger himself, who hired Sullivan in 1965 expressly for this project. The use of investment casting was a cost-saving measure that underscored Ruger's innovative approach. The M77 quickly gained popularity for its Mauser-type claw extractor, filling a void in the market created when Winchester discontinued the controlled round feed version of the Model 70 in 1964. It also garnered favor among shooters, bolstered by endorsements from firearms writer Jack O'Connor.
Initially conceived as a modernized Mauser 98, the M77 incorporated significant modifications including an investment-cast receiver, a Sullivan-designed bolt with a plunger-style ejector, and a two-position tang safety. The rifle's unique angled screw system tightened the action securely against the stock. Over the years, the M77 underwent several enhancements, culminating in the 2006 introduction of the Ruger Hawkeye. This updated model featured improvements to the trigger system with the LC6 trigger, addressing previous concerns and providing a lighter, smoother trigger pull that was easier for gunsmiths to adjust. The Hawkeye also introduced refinements to the stock contour while maintaining the rifle's enduring reliability and appeal among hunters and shooters alike.
The .264 Winchester Magnum is a belted, bottlenecked rifle cartridge. Except for the .244 H&H Magnum and .257 Weatherby Magnum, it is the smallest caliber factory cartridge derived from the 2.85 in Holland & Holland belted magnum case. It was introduced in the late 1950s and early 1960s with the .338 Winchester Magnum and the .458 Winchester Magnum as one of a family of short-cased 2.5 in belted magnum cartridges developed by Winchester based on the .375 Holland & Holland parent case. It was officially introduced to the public by Winchester in 1959. After many years of dwindling use it began enjoying a mild resurgence in popularity in the mid-2000s among long range rifle enthusiasts and reloaders due to the high ballistic coefficient of the heavier 6.5mm bullets and increasing popularity of cartridges such as 6.5mm Creedmoor, .260 Remington, 6.5 Grendel, benchrest and wildcat cartridges in 6.5mm.
