Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 2006, Ruger made a 50th year commemorative New Model Flattop that emulated the origional Old Model Flattop from 1956. The new flattop has a slightly smaller cylinder frame (.1" shorter in length and .1" shorter in height). As such, the cylinder is also smaller in diameter and length so you can not shoot "Ruger Only" loads in the 45 cal models. It also has the old XR3 shaped grip frame so normal New Model XR3-RED grips won't fit.
The Ruger Blackhawk is a single-action revolver that holds six shots. It is manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. and is available in various finishes, calibers, and barrel lengths. It has been a favorite among firearm enthusiasts and collectors for many years and has become a legend in the firearm collecting industry. The early models of the Blackhawk were similar to the Colt in that the hammer had to be half-cocked to load and unload the firearm. It was not safe to carry the revolver with all six chambers loaded because the hammer rested on the sixth chamber. This design led to accidents, so in 1973, Ruger introduced the New Model Blackhawk.
The New Model Blackhawk was different from the earlier models because it did not require the hammer to be half-cocked for loading and unloading. It also featured a transfer bar mechanism that prevented the cartridge under the hammer from being fired without the trigger being pulled. This innovation helped to reduce firearms accidents and legal liability. Ruger offered a retrofit program to convert earlier Blackhawk models to the New Model. This program included a free transfer bar conversion, which made the older models safer to use.
