The Colt Model 1911 was designed by John Moses Browning, the most prolific firearms inventor and designer of all time. During his lifetime he designed more firearms than any other firearms inventor in history, with the Model 1911 being the pinnacle of his success. The Ordnance Department placed its first contract order on May 5 1911 for 31,344 pistols. In 1924 Colt Resumed production of a slightly modified 1911, which was designated the Colt Model 1911-A1. By the end of World War II in 1945, Colt had manufactured 733,479 Model1911-A1 Automatic pistols. The Colt Model 1911 played a major role in America's war efforts. Its successful design has proven a popular and highly respected automatic pistol for both the bullseye and the battlefield. It has been estimated that another 2,000,000 plus copies of the Colt Model 1911-A1 have been manufactured by a multitude of firearms manufacturers throughout the world, a testament to Colt's original tried and true pistol that has served so many so faithfully for the last 100 years.
