Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Smith & Wesson's M&P is not their first polymer frame striker-fired pistol, but it has many improvements over their lower cost Sigma series pistols. These improvements include a better trigger action, field interchangeable palm swells, a black Melonite finished stainless steel barrel and slide with twin scalloped slide serrations, a Zytel polymer frame reinforced with a stainless steel chassis, and an accessory rail.
The plate number 1 cartridge was created in collaboration between SIGARMS and Federal Cartridge. It uses a bottlenecked .40 S&W casing, which is crimped to a 9mm bullet. The cartridge is not referred to as '.357' because it does not use a true .357 caliber bullet. Instead, it uses a standard 9mm bullet (.3550 in). The aim of the plate number 1 design was to create a cartridge that would have stopping power comparable to the larger .357 Magnum revolver round, but in a smaller package that would fit comfortably in the grip of a semi-automatic weapon. Although the manufacturer claims that it is as powerful as an actual .357 Magnum, it falls slightly short of that claim. However, it does exceed the power of a .40 S&W cartridge.
