Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the Great War, Remington faced difficulties in bringing 1911 production online because Colt did not provide them with any design drawings or sets of master gauges. Although Colt supplied the first set of drawings, it only included nominal dimensions without any indication of tolerances. A second set of drawings with 430 discrepancies was supplied later. Remington had to find five military-issue Colt 1911s with satisfactory parts interchangeability and produced their own drawings by measuring every part. They set the nominal measurements as the average and the tolerances as the extremes. This was not the ideal method of starting production, but Colt wasn't helping, and there was a war going on.

Originally, Remington UMC had received a contract for 150,000 pistols, which was later increased to 500,000 in March 1918. At that time, it was believed that the war could continue for years. However, the Germans launched Operation Michael in the same month the order was increased. Instead of the war continuing, the Germans were pushed back to the Hindenburg line, which was breached, and the Armistice was signed in November. As a result, Remington UMC produced only 21,676 Model 1911 pistols.

This is a Commemorative Remington-UMC 1911 made in 2014. This pistol features period markings, checkering patterns, dimensions, carbona blue finish, and was even made without a firing pin block safety to get as close to the original as possible. Only 1,000 of these rare Commemoratives were made, and each one was hand-fitted.
