The Ruger No. 1 is a single-shot rifle that features a Farquharson-style hammerless falling-block action. It has been manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. since 1967. To load the rifle, an underlever is used to lower the breechblock, which also cocks the rifle. Lenard Brownell, who worked at Ruger, praised the No. 1's strength, saying that he had trouble trying to tear it up during testing and never managed to blow one apart. The rifle has a shotgun-style tang safety that works on the hammer and sear. The Ruger No. 1 is available in a variety of calibers and with an Alexander Henry, beavertail, or Mannlicher-style forearm.

Its falling-block breech mechanism, artillery-style breech block, and under-lever offer reliable performance with a classic look. The sculpted receiver provides strong support for the barrel, stock, and breech block. The sliding tang safety is highly visible and intuitive to operate, ensuring superior reliability. The ejector mechanism delivers maximum leverage when ejecting the cartridge case, and can be adjusted for extraction only. This is useful for hunters and shooters who want to keep their brass casings for reloading and quick cleanup. The rifle's precision-machined and integrated scope mount provides a stable mounting surface for scope rings (not included). Its cold hammer-forged barrel ensures impeccable accuracy, long-lasting durability, and performance. The sporting-style buttpad offers superior comfort and improved control, while the factory-installed sling swivel studs accept a variety of aftermarket sling swivels for added convenience.
