Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The first Model 48, serial number K 348746, was produced on May 11, 1959, and was featured in the Smith & Wesson catalog by August of the same year, as documented by Roy Jinks in History of Smith & Wesson. Since its introduction, the Model 48 has been exclusively available in a blue finish, with barrel lengths of 4, 6, and 8 3/8 inches. Over the years, this revolver has undergone four revisions, each introducing significant changes to its design. The original Model 48 (without a dash) was a four-screw revolver and debuted in 1959. The first revision, the Model 48-1, was introduced on December 22, 1959, and featured a change in the extractor from a right-hand thread to a left-hand thread. The Model 48-2, released on December 29, 1961, modified the cylinder stop to eliminate the fourth screw at the front of the trigger guard. The Model 48-3, introduced on December 14, 1967, relocated the rear sight leaf screw. The final revision, the Model 48-4, released in 1977, moved the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder. In 1982, Smith & Wesson eliminated the pinned barrel feature, marking another shift in the design of the Model 48. It has also been reported that a limited number of Model 48 revolvers were initially produced with both .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinders, though this option was discontinued shortly after its introduction. These revisions reflect Smith & Wesson's ongoing commitment to improving the performance and functionality of the Model 48, ensuring its place as a highly regarded revolver in the company's legacy.
