Smith & Wesson unveiled the original Model 66 in 1970, branding it the Combat Magnum. Chambered in the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge, this revolver was built on the renowned K-frame platform, striking a well-regarded balance between lightweight handling and robust durability. Closely resembling the popular Model 19, the Model 66 distinguished itself with a stainless steel frame instead of carbon steel, offering enhanced corrosion resistance. While the Model 19 maintained its strong popularity among shooters and police forces, the Model 66 carved out its own loyal following among enthusiasts and law enforcement alike. Over the years, the design saw several updates—some significant enough to warrant new model designations marked by hyphens and numbers on the frame, such as the Model 66-1 for the first engineering revision. Although the widespread shift to semi-automatic pistols in the 1980s and ’90s led to a decline in revolver demand, the Model 66 persisted in Smith & Wesson’s lineup until being discontinued in the mid-2000s—only to make a return in 2014.
