Encouraged by the success of an ongoing military contract, Colt shifted his focus to the civilian market in 1848. This move led to the creation of civilian pocket revolvers, such as the Wells Fargo and the 1849 Pocket, which were compact .31 caliber pistols designed to fit easily into a coat pocket. The innovation of silver spring steel played a key role in Colt’s ability to adapt his designs, allowing him to fit a .44 caliber cylinder onto a .36 caliber frame. This same material innovation also enabled Colt to upgrade the .31 caliber 1849 Pocket revolver to a more powerful .36 caliber. The 1862 Pocket Navy model retained the octagon barrel and hinged loading lever from the earlier 1851 Navy revolver, while the 1862 Police model offered a more compact, streamlined design. The Police model featured a fluted cylinder, a round barrel with a smoother profile, and a distinctive "creeping" loading lever, which was a departure from the traditional lever found on earlier models.

The Pocket and Police models were significant as they marked the final chapter in Colt's production of muzzle-loading revolvers.
